A tour of two Art Design Chicago exhibitions that dive into Chicago’s feminist art histories and the legacy of one of the oldest WPA era art centers in the country.

Over the past year, Art Design Chicago has been illuminating the legacy of art and design that’s embedded in Chicago’s history and culture through a full calendar of exhibitions, events, and other programs across the city. As editorial partners in this effort, we’re working with them to to elevate the stories of Chicago’s lesser-known artists, designers, and creators, past and present, through comics, essays, interviews, podcasts, and videos. For the videos we’ve teamed up with On The Real Film to present short profiles that highlight the exhibitions, projects, and people who are showcasing these legacies in various ways.

The fifth and final video in this series, “Curating Chicago : Meg Duguid and Leslie Guy” follows curators Meg Duguid and Leslie Guy in walkthroughs of their current exhibitions Where the Future Came From at Glass Curtain Gallery at Columbia College Chicago and Change the Canvas, Change the World at South Side Community Art Center, respectively.

On The Real Film travelled with the two curators as they discussed the process of uncovering histories while putting together their respective exhibitions and who’s responsible for the richness of art in Chicago. Where the Future Came From, curated by Meg Duguid, focuses on the role of feminist artist-run activities in Chicago from the late 19th century to the present. Change the Canvas, Change the World, curated by Leslie Guy, explores the work and careers of the ground-breaking artists, such as Margaret Burroughs, Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, and Elizabeth Catlett, who created the South Side Community Art Center and made the city a hub of Black cultural life.
