May Craft Up
This Friday join the creators of the Chicago Church of Craft as they teach two different envelope crafts. Using a little soap, water, and food coloring, you can dye envelopes by popping the color right onto them! What says spring like a little color? They will also be making the most of those beautiful, neglected patterns found on the insides of security envelopes. Bring your old security envelopes and get ready for what they call upcycling! Refreshments will be served.

Compositions by Dayo Laoye
Join Yoruba native and long-time Chicago resident Dayo Laoye during this semi-retrospective of paintings, drawings that illustrate the waves of his practice through everything from portraits of Yoruban Priestesses to experiments with the possibilities of paint with pure abstraction and charcoal/pastel portraits of local Chicagoans. While showing work that he has done over decades, the show will also exhibit how his work has evolved through the more recent works on display. “Without trying to blow my own trumpet this exhibition will show the viewer how freer my style is getting.” – Dayo Laoye

South Side Community Art Center
3831 S Michigan
6pm – 9pm

SATURDAY || May 21, 2011

John Neff (Performance in print and process)
Equal parts exhibition and performance, John Neff Prints Robert Blanchon will be in process at Golden Gallery from May 18 to June 25, 2011. The show will revolve around Blanchon’s 1995 photo-based conceptual work Untitled (aroma / 1981), a collection of advertisements for queer sex products selected by Blanchon from pre-AIDS gay publications. For this two stage exhibition, Neff will first display the extant posthumously printed components of Untitled and then, within the gallery space, use those remnants to recreate negative transparencies and – this time unfixed and sure to fade – sepia prints. Additional components of the project will include Blanchon’s 1998 Glass Horse, a copy-and-print stand by Neff based on that sculpture and a modified, limited edition, bookwork altering the Robert Blanchon catalog published by Visual AIDS in 2006.
