The Man Behind the Murals

The Man Behind the Murals
After first glimpsing the work of Mental 312 from the Green Line in the winter of 2010, I’ve been on the lookout for more of the street artist’s large artworks. On foot, El, Metra, and CTA bus, I’ve come upon Mental’s bold colors and distinct style all over the city. Last month I finally caught up with the man behind the murals and talked to him about his process, inspiration, and ideas for...

Street Art Approval

Street Art Approval
Mental 312. Polish Village, Chicago, IL. (Photo credit: Mujju Ullah) Last week, while exploring Chicago’s Polish Village, I interrupted my friend mid-sentence as a familiar sight came into view. “Another one!” I exclaimed. Quickly, we crossed Milwaukee and headed towards a wall featuring the street art of Mental 312. Mental’s thick, blue lines were similar to his other pieces: bold and expansive,...

Caution: Wet Paint

Caution: Wet Paint
Psychologists coined the term “perceptual vigilance” to describe the way that one starts seeing something everywhere after they first take notice of it. Well, it seems that this phenomenon has taken hold of the members of Sixty Inches From Center. Over the past month, many of us couldn’t help but notice Mental 312’s street art all over Chicago. Exiting the highway, cruising by on a CTA bus,...

Mental Strikes on the North Side

Mental Strikes on the North Side
When I took the Red Line north from Addison last weekend, the window to my left was suddenly filled with the light blue shapes of the street artist known as Mental. Until now I’ve only encountered his work while riding the Green Line south from the loop, so coming upon his work up north was a complete surprise. This piece differs slightly from his works on the south side: here, his designs snake...

Mental Strikes Again

Mental Strikes Again
Mental 312, the artist already responsible for one large piece of street art visible from the Green Line has recently created another. The new piece adorns an abandoned three-flat near the Garfield stop. It is the same geometric style as his other recent piece (near the Green Line Indiana station), except rendered in purple instead of teal. If you find yourself in the Washington Park area, I recommend...

Fresh South Side Street Art

Fresh South Side Street Art
As of about ten days ago, there’s something new to look at from the left side of the Green Line train when heading north from Garfield. A formerly empty wall has been transformed into a piece of teal, geometric street art. I recommend braving the cold and taking a closer look. Discover more Mental 312 here.  Read More →
