To our beloved community:
As a collective of artists, writers, archivists, and cultural workers from many different cultural identities whose work is dedicated to celebrating and preserving our communities’ stories, Sixty Inches From Center unequivocally condemns the violence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal agents supporting ICE, and all forms of immigrant detention and deportation tactics. Since its creation, ICE has sustained a carceral and necropolitical system that decides which lives are protected by borders and which lives are policed by them, extending a legacy of white nationalism. In recent weeks, we have witnessed brutal crackdowns by ICE in our hometown of Chicago as part of Trump’s “Operation Midway Blitz” and across the country that threaten our communities.
We affirm that no one should live in fear and with the threat of displacement. To stand with migrants is to stand with the right to remain, to move, to remember, and to create without borders and without fear. We are all citizens of the world and must treat each other with dignity and respect regardless of where we come from.
To target those who are vulnerable in society—immigrants, poor and unhoused people, disabled people, religious minorities, queer and trans people of color— is an authoritarian power tactic that has been used throughout history to instill fear, divide the working class, and distract us from economic, social, and environmental injustice by finding a scapegoat for unrest. We must not succumb to such fearmongering. We must step up, remain firm in our stance, and say it loud:
Abolish ICE. Abolish borders. Migration and safety from state violence are sacred human rights.
Sixty refuses to be intimidated by authoritarian rhetoric in media or armed bullies in our streets. We refuse to waver in our values or to comply with the goals of white nationalism. Sixty remains dedicated to platforming work by, about, and for migrant communities and will continue to support writing that documents and responds to the cultural traditions and practices of the very people this current authoritarian regime hopes to disappear from public life.
In 2023, Sixty launched Sesenta En Español and hired our first bilingual editor, formalizing our commitment to Spanish-speaking communities, and we will continue to invest in non-English publishing priorities to uplift and support those most harmed by these oppressive and harmful policies.
And while there are many feelings that we are all experiencing, from anger to mourning to fear, we at Sixty want to offer you a reminder that there are tangible ways that we can stand up to fascism. There are protests to join, civil leaders to speak to, neighborhood ICE watches to organize and join, families in need of nourishment and comfort, and community bonds to strengthen.
Below, we have compiled and will continue to update a list of resources for those threatened by federal violence, opportunities to support Chicago’s migrant communities, opportunities to learn, and more. Como colectivo de artistas, escritores, archivistas y trabajadores culturales de diversas identidades que dedicamos nuestro trabajo a celebrar y preservar las historias de nuestras comunidades, Sixty Inches From Center condena la violencia de ICE y de los agentes federales que lo apoyan y todas las tácticas de detención y deportación de migrantes. Desde su creación, ICE ha sostenido un sistema carcelario y xenófobo que decide qué vidas están protegidas por las fronteras y cuáles son vigiladas por ellas, perpetuando así un legado de nacionalismo blanco. En las últimas semanas, hemos presenciado brutales acciones de ICE en nuestra ciudad natal de Chicago, como parte de la “Operación Midway Blitz” de Trump, y en todo el país, que amenazan a nuestras comunidades.
Afirmamos que nadie debería vivir con miedo ni bajo la amenaza del desplazamiento. Apoyar a las personas migrantes es apoyar su derecho a permanecer, a moverse, a recordar, y a crear sin fronteras ni miedo. Todos somos ciudadanos del mundo y debemos tratarnos con dignidad y respeto, independientemente de nuestro origen.
Atacar a las personas vulnerables de la sociedad—migrantes, personas pobres y sin hogar, personas con discapacidad, minorías religiosas, personas queer y trans de color—es una táctica de poder autoritaria que se ha utilizado a lo largo de la historia para causar miedo, dividir a la clase trabajadora, y distraernos de la injusticia económica, social, y ambiental. No debemos sucumbir a esta manipulación del miedo. Debemos alzar la voz, mantenernos firmes en nuestra postura y decirlo alto y claro:
¡Fuera ICE! ¡No a las fronteras! La migración y la seguridad frente a la violencia estatal son derechos humanos fundamentales.
Sixty se niega a dejarse intimidar por la retórica autoritaria en los medios ni por los armados en nuestras calles. Nos negamos a silenciar nuestros valores o a sostener los objetivos del nacionalismo blanco. Sesenta mantiene su compromiso de dar visibilidad al trabajo realizado por, sobre, y para las comunidades migrantes, y seguirá apoyando la escritura que documenta y responde a las tradiciones y prácticas culturales de las mismas personas a las que este régimen autoritario pretende borrar de la vida pública.
En 2023, Sixty Inches From Center lanzó Sesenta En Español y contrató a su primer editora bilingüe, formalizando nuestro compromiso con las comunidades latinas, y continuaremos invirtiendo en prioridades editoriales en idiomas mas alla del inglés para apoyar y ayudar a quienes se ven más perjudicados por estas políticas opresivas.
Aquí en Sesenta queremos recordarles que existen maneras de organizarnos frente al fascismo. Hay protestas a las que podemos unirnos, líderes civiles con quienes debemos hablar, colectivos de vecinos contra ICE que organizan y en las que podemos participar, apoyar a las familias que necesitan alimento y consuelo, y fortalecer relaciones comunitarias.
