Chicago Alternative Comics Expo 2013

When CAKE (the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo) debuted last year, it was the first such festival to take place in Chicago since the mid-’90s. This year, the organizers put together a lineup of more than 200 guests including Onli Studios, whose series Heroes of the Black Age recently celebrated its 20th anniversary; Gabrielle Gamboa, currently adapting the Nathaniel West novel Miss Lonelyhearts; and Northwest Press, whose founder Charles “Zan” Christensen was named to OUT Magazine‘s “Out 100” list in 2011. On Saturday, visitors could also see Chris Ware speak about his connection to Chicago, and on Sunday, special guest Kim Deitch spoke about his new book The Amazing, Enlightening and Absolutely True Adventures of Katherine Whaley, out this year from Fantagraphics. CAKE pays homage to the city’s vibrant history of independent comics while simultaneously giving new and emerging artists a venue to exhibit their work. (Image credits: Melissa Patiño)
