Bilingual Editor (Spanish)

Deadline to apply: August 19, 2022

Sixty Inches From Center is looking for a Bilingual Editor to assist in our ongoing efforts in publishing and uplifting the stories of artists, cultural workers, archivists, organizers, memory workers, and writers within our communities (LGBTQ+, femme, BIPOC, diasporic, and disability). We are looking for an editor with English being their second (or third) language and Spanish being their first, to guide our efforts in publishing Spanish and/or bilingual work.

The Bilingual Editor will be responsible for editing articles via Google Docs, preparing the article for publication in WordPress, and keeping track of the article information and editorial process in Sixty’s publishing calendar using the online project management tool Trello. We would also like the person in this role to solicit Spanish and/or bilingual (English/Spanish) writing to be published on Sixty, as this is a growing publishing initiative (read some of our past bilingual articles here).

The editor will receive one-on-one training with a current Sixty team member and will also have the option of attending bi-weekly pitch meetings, along with other Sixty team meetings (all virtual). The person in this position will also have the opportunity to write for Sixty and/or collaborate on special projects, if they so choose.

This role has the option of being 100% remote and is open to anyone based in the Midwest.

Pay rate for editing bilingual articles is between $100 and $150, which includes articles in English, Spanish, and blended articles of English AND Spanish. Editors are also paid $20 per hour for admin time (such as time spent in team meetings or doing outreach to new potential writers). Editor is not responsible for translation, though interest in translation is welcomed.

For this role, the editor will need to commit to the following:

  • Initiate outreach and solicit pitches from Spanish-speaking writers
  • Attending 2 virtual pitch meetings a month (about one hour each). If this person cannot attend a pitch meeting, they will let the team know and offer their feedback prior to the meeting.
  • Follow through on Sixty’s editorial process from the pitch to publishing when working with a writer
  • Participate in editorial discussions via email and/or Slack when they come up

What you’ll be doing:

  • Actively seeking writers who have the desire to write in Spanish and/or write in a way that blends/bends the language
  • Staying connected with Sixty team members by attending Sixty Pitch Meetings (twice a month, one hour each), All-Contributor Meetings ( every 6 weeks, two hours each, optional), and at least one Admin Meeting (with the option of attending additional Admin Meetings, once a month, two hours each)
  • Collectively working with Sixty’s editorial team throughout the editorial process
  • Editing articles (interview, essays, reviews, etc.) within Google Docs and WordPress for publication
  • Communicating with writers through the editorial process to ensure that they understand our process, that the voice of the artist/s being discussed/interviewed is being captured accurately and authentically, and that Sixty has all the appropriate information we need for all parties to be compensated
  • Corresponding with Sixty photographers and illustrators as needed in order to coordinate the creation of photos/graphics for an article when appropriate

What you’ll need to do it:

  • A commitment to Sixty’s mission and ethos
  • A desire to gain editorial skills while creating editorial opportunities for writers/artists who do not have English as their first language
  • A love of writing and an interest in working with other writers to help develop & guide their ideas/projects
  • A collaborative work ethic and mindset
  • A willingness to learn and ask questions
