Secret Sideshow :: New Work by Laura Berger
You may have seen her work recently at the Bucktown Arts Fest, or if you found yourself at the Enormous Tiny Art Show at Nahcotta Gallery in New Hampshire, then you know her work. Luckily you don’t have to go that far to check out more of Laura’s work. Take in her latest illustrations in this solo show at Hazel. Drinks, snacks and hugs for all!

Fresh Prints: Artists from Hyde Park Art Center and Spudnik Press
A new exhibit at West Town’s Star Lounge Coffee Bar brings together some of the city’s foremost print artists exploring various styles and media of printmaking. “Fresh Prints” features intaglio printing made with metal sheets, silk screening and woodcut prints. Featuring work by Elke Claus, Angee Lennard, Liz Born, Antonio Martinez, Barlow Nelson and Michelle Nordmeyer, the show represents artists who create on the city’s South Side at the Hyde Park Art Center’s printmaking program, as well as in Ukrainian Village at Spudnik Press Cooperative. The exhibit continues through November 30, 2011.

HereafterFest 2011
Check out the sounds of Microcosmic Sound Orchestra with Charles Joseph Smith-piano and synthesizer, Alex wing-bass, David Boykin-drum set and reeds. This beautiful music will have you seeing sound. On Saturday you can experience Henry Grimes with Renee Baker’s Chicago Modern Orchestra Project. Henry Grimes on bass and violin, David Boykin on saxophones and clarinet, and Vincent Davis.

CHICAGO JAZZFEST AFTERFEST with Elastic Arts
Elastic is the key to the Chicago Jazzfest afterparty! Visit the Logan Square Arts Center and take in some tunes from some of the best musicians who will be taking over the city all weekend long. Friday features Mwata Bowden, Douglas Ewart, Edward Wilkerson, Francis Wong, Avreeayl Ra, Tatsu Aoki and poet Khari B. , featuring Kidd Jordan. Saturday will feature Mwata Bowden (AACM) and Tatsu Aoki (Asian Improv) with Douglas Ewart and Hanah Jon Taylor for Elastic Intersections.

African Festival of the Arts.
Art and Bootsy Collins–what a combination. In it’s 22nd year, the African Fest brings together art and music every year in Washington Park. The African Festival of the Arts is the flagship program of Africa International House USA, Inc. (AIH), a not for profit organization working to bridge the divides between the peoples of the African Diaspora in Chicago.

To righteously commemorate the launch of Goshi.me’s FREE art sharing mobile app, the founders of Join Creative and Co-founders of goshi.me are pleased to invite you to Goshi’s pop up art gallery opening. Curated by Join Creative & RGB Lounge’s Stuart Hall and co-curated by Melissa Rasmussen, Erika Patterson, Clayton Meyer and Ezra Livingston, the show also includes the gastronomic escapades of Join Creative Head Chef Sean Zemke and the Bang Bang Pie and Coffee Show, as well as a curated closet of vintage couture by RGB’s Mo Mohead and model fashions of Frog Greishaw.

End of Summer/Back To School Street Fest
Urban Art Retreat will offer a special fun street fest which will include food & drinks, balloons, face painting, art tables, pretend stage with real talent, artists booths and community resources tables for people to browse. In connection with the neighborhood block club, there will be jumping jack. There will also be a free clothing table, children will perform plays they have written about youth violence and domestic violence, the parade kicks off at noon with anyone who shows up with a costume and wants to participate! Live bands will perform and it is all free!

STRÖBEL/travis (closing reception for NEW CATALOGUE/KANDIS WILLIAMS)
In the white cube gallery upstairs, within Kandis Williams’ newly situated exhibition of images of severed Tanzanian albino limbs, travis will perform excerpts from his passionate and visceral, 1980 piece, “ALBINO.” Downstairs, in the raw space New Catalogue’s artifacts, generated as content for a modern day Golden Record, will be on view with Katrin Ströbel’s two-channel video “Mission Impossible.” The video presents historical Christian missionaries in Africa attempting to convert the natives, with contemporary African Christians on the streets of a European city proselytizing to an oblivious audience of passer-bys.
