Detail of “Gone but Not Forgotten,” an ongoing going collaborative quilting project organized by Rachel Wallis. This is one of six memorial quilts created to commemorate individuals killed by the Chicago Police Department or while in police custody since 2006. The quilts, in collaboration with grassroots group We Charge Genocide, were created during a series of 15 peace quilting circles where participants could read the victims’ stories to the group while hand embroidering the piece in their memory. More than 200 people from the Chicago area came together to discuss transformative justice, police accountability, and community safety during these events.
