Sixty’s selection of art exhibitions and events in Chicago and the Midwest for May 2026.

A digital illustration featuring two people facing a large glass case filled with eight different soccer trophies. The person on the left wears a pink apron with an embroidered red border and flowers, their grey hair is fastened into a low bun with a yellow hair tie. Their right arm is resting on the second person's shoulders. The second person has short brown hair and wears a red and white striped shirt. At the top of the image are three flags hanging in front of the case; one is red with a yellow stripe going down the middle; one is striped green, white, and red with a black outline of a bird in the middle; the third is white with one thin red line running vertically and one red line running horizontally. On the left and right sides of the trophy case are soccer jerseys with a few of the art pick selections written on them. The jerseys represent different countries playing in the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Illustration by Buflo

Created in collaboration with The Visualist, Chicago’s leading visual arts calendar, Sixty’s Art Picks is a wide selection of Midwest arts events, handpicked for our audience of artists, cultural workers, and curators, prioritizing the spaces and events of historically marginalized peoples. Our list is broad but by no means comprehensive; please look at venue calendars to find more events.

All times are listed in Central Standard Time unless otherwise noted. Click here to get our Art Picks and latest articles delivered to your inbox monthly. You can find Art Picks from previous months here.

Before attending any in-person events, we hope you’ll read this open letter cowritten by a group of disabled queers to the Chicago party community, demanding COVID-safe protocols and mindful gathering to protect the most vulnerable members of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this letter is to reach organizers who plan events and cultivate spaces for queer community building and joyPlease remember to mask; the pandemic is on-going.

About the image maker: “Buflo” is a Latino graffiti artist who has been painting illegally for more than 10 years. Lately he channels his earliest memories of doing graffiti through short stories giving a glimpse on what one artist might go thru during painting a night in the south side of Chicago.
