PHOTOGRAPHER CAROLINA SANCHEZ ON LESTER REY

I first stumbled upon Lester Rey y Los Liones (back when he performed by that name) in a church parking lot in 2015. That was my first Lester Rey experience. The boogaloo, the sound of congas, and salsa echoing through the streets of Pilsen, made me want to keep an eye on this kid.

“What sets Lester apart is his fearless exploration of identity through music. His work is deeply personal yet universal, resonating with those who exist between cultures, between languages, between worlds. Whether blending reggaetón with house beats, or cumbia with synth-heavy textures.”

Later, when I became the resident photographer for Cumbiasazo, our paths crossed again. But this time, he wasn’t Lester Rey y Los Liones anymore—he was just Lester Rey. He had stripped away Los Liones and chose to be his true self by making music on his own terms. Embracing the concept of “ni de aquí, ni de allá,” drawing knowledge from both worlds to create something entirely new. Lester reshaped Latin rhythms, breaking away from expectations. His music blends spoken word with musical collaborations from local electronic artists, forging a futuristic Latin sound that defies tradition. Whether blending reggaetón with house beats, or cumbia with synth-heavy textures. Lester doesn’t just make music—he creates sonic landscapes that challenge and inspire.

Ten years later, Lester is still pushing boundaries, evolving, and proving that his sound is neither from here nor there—it’s entirely his own. On January 8, 2025, we celebrated Lester Rey’s ten-year contribution to Latin music in Chicago and beyond at the Old Town School of Folk Music. And the community showed up big! From longtime supporters who had been with Lester since day one to newcomers experiencing his sound for the first time, the night was filled with love and energy. Among the crowd was his son, Luca, watching, dancing, and even singing at one point—witnessing his father’s journey firsthand. Lester and his wife (a stylist and singer) Énez poured their musical talent into the night, sharing their passion with everyone in attendance. This wasn’t just a celebration of Lester’s career; it was a moment to honor the people who had supported him along the way.

Lester curated the night to reflect his evolution, bringing his music from the past decade back to life while showcasing who he is today. He invited musical collaborators who had been integral to his journey: Gabacho, Santrio, and Lila Star, performers who have uplifted and grown alongside him in Chicago’s musical movement. It was more than just a concert; it was a testament to a decade of artistry, community, and fearless reinvention.

Old Town School of Folk Music.
